William Westwood McCreery, Jr.: Born Sept. 1836. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1855, to July 1, 1860, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Bvt. Second Lieut. of Artillery, July 1, 1860. Served: in garrison at Ft. Monroe, Va., 1860‑61. Second Lieut., 4th Artillery, Jan. 1, 1861. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861: in Defense of Washington, D. C., Mar.‑Apr., 1861, — and of Ft. Pickens, Fla., Apr.‑May, 1861.
Dismissed, June 3, 1861,
Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States,a and was Killed, July 3, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pa.: Aged 27. Buried, Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC. |
a As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record. The deficiency is made good at his page at Find-a‑Grave linked above; it erases any impression of cowardice left in the reader's mind by the entry in the Register.
