Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑62: as Acting Aide-de‑Camp to Colonel Cameron, commanding 79th New York Volunteers, June‑July, 1861, in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., and in  p795 the Manassas Campaign of July, 1861, being engaged in the Action of Blackburn's Ford, July 18, 1861, — and Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861; in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., July, 1861, to Mar., 1862;

(Captain, 16th Infantry, Sep. 27, 1861)

in command of Company of 3d Infantry in the Virginia Peninsular Campaign (Army of the Potomac), Mar. to Aug., 1862, being engaged in the Siege of Yorktown, Apr. 5 to May 4, 1862, — and Battles before Richmond, June 25 to July 1, 1862; in the Northern Virginia Campaign, Aug.‑Sep., 1862, being engaged in the Battle of Manassas, Aug. 29‑30,
