Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1856, to May 6, 1861, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 8th Infantry, May 6, 1861. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑62: in drilling Volunteers at Washington, D. C., May to July, 1861; in the Manassas (First Lieut., 8th Infantry, June 11, 1861) Campaign of July, 1861, being engaged in the Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861; on Provost Guard duty at Washington, D. C., July to Oct., 1861; in garrison at Ft. Hamilton, N. Y., Oct. 12, 1861, to May 25, 1862; and in the Virginia Campaign, in General Banks's Corps, May 26 to Aug. 9, 1862, being engaged in the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Aug. 9, (Bvt. Captain, Aug. 9, 1862, for Gallant and Meritorious Services at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Va.) 1862, where he was wounded; on sick leave of absence, disabled by wound, Aug. 9 to Nov. 19, 1862. Served: at the Military Academy, 1862‑65, as Asst. Professor of Geography, History, and Ethics, Dec. 1, 1862, to Mar. 20, 1863, — and as Asst. Instructor of Infantry Tactics, Mar. 20, 1863, to Sep. 9, 1865; in command of Company, at Baltimore, Md., Sep. 30, 1865, to Jan. 12, 1866, — at Winchester, Va., Jan. 31 to Mar., 1866, — Morgantown, N. C., (Captain, 8th Infantry, Feb. 13, 1866) Mar. to July, 1866, — Raleigh, N. C., July, 1866, to May, 1867; on leave of absence, May 27, 1867, to Feb. 4, 1868; in garrison at Raleigh, N. C., Feb. to May, 1868, — Charleston, S. C., May to July, 1868, — and Summerville, S. C., July, 1868; and on sick leave of absence, and before Retiring Board, to Feb. 18, 1869.
