Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861: in drilling Volunteers at Washington, D. C., May 7‑27, 1861; at the Cavalry School for Practice, Carlisle, Pa., May‑June, 1861; and en route to join his Company, June to Aug., 1861.

Resigned (Sick), Aug. 19, 1861.

Joined in the Rebellion of 1861‑66 against the United States.​b

Civil History. — Civil Engineer in Mexico, 1866. Real Estate Agent, St. Louis, Mo., 1866; Mining Engineer in California and Nevada, 1866‑67.

Died, Nov. 28, 1877, at Brooklyn, N. Y.: Aged 39.

Buried, Old Chapel Cemetery, Millwood, VA.

a Maj. Henry's birthdate is from his tombstone, q.v. His first name is variously given as Mathias, as here, or Mathis, as in Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army.

b As with other Confederate officers, Cullum's Register omits his war record: the Southern Historical Society Papers list him among those who took up Confederate service, but offers no further details. If you have good information, I'll be happy to hear from you, of course.
