Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1856, to May 6, 1861, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 1st Infantry, May 6, 1861. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1861‑66: in drilling Volunteers at Washington, D. C., May to July, 1861; in the Manassas (First Lieut., 1st Infantry, June 24, 1861) Campaign of July, 1861, being engaged in the Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861, when he was captured; on Recruiting service at Ft. Columbus, N. Y., Sep., 1861, to Mar., 1862; as Mustering and Disbursing Officer at Buffalo, N. Y., Mar., 1862, to Sep., 1863; in command of (Captain, 1st Infantry, Apr. 25, 1862) Company at New Orleans, La., Oct. 31, 1863, to Jan. 7, 1864; as Commissary of Musters, Department of the Gulf, Jan. 7 to Nov. 19, 1864; as Chief Mustering and Disbursing Officer of the Military Division of West Mississippi, Nov. 19, 1864, to Aug. 15, 1865, — and of the Department p811 (Bvt. Major, and Bvt. Lieut.‑Colonel, Mar. 13, 1865, for Gallant and Meritorious Services during the Rebellion) of the Gulf, Oct. 10, 1865, to June 9, 1866; and on leave of absence, June 9 to Nov. 1, 1866. Served: in garrison at Jackson Barracks, La., Nov. 1, 1866, to Apr., 1867; as Supervisor of Board of Registers, New Orleans, La., Apr. 20 to Oct., 1867; in garrison at Jackson Barracks, La., Oct. 17, 1867, to Sep., 1868; on leave of absence, Sep. 24, 1868, to Mar. 13, 1869; in garrison at Ft. Porter, N. Y., Apr., 1869, to Jan. 24, 1871; on frontier (Transferred to 6th Cavalry, Jan. 1, 1871) duty Scouting in Kansas, Mar. 17 to July, 1871; in garrison at Aberdeen, Mis., Aug. 2 to Oct. 7, 1871; on frontier duty at Ft. Riley, Kan., Oct. 29, 1871, to Dec. 7, 1872, — and Camp near Ft. Hays, Kan., June to Oct., 1872; and on sick leave of absence, Dec. 7, 1872, to May 17, 1876.
Retired from Active Service, May 17, 1876,
Vol. IV Military History. — Retired officer. Died July 24, 1892, at Hagerstown, Md.: Aged 54. |
