Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1862‑66: as Adjutant, 1st Cavalry, July 19, 1862, to May 26, 1863, — at Yorktown, Va., (First Lieut., 1st Cavalry, July 27, 1862) July‑Aug., 1862, — in the Maryland Campaign (Army of the Potomac), Sep. to Nov., 1862, on Quartermaster duty, — and in the Rappahannock Campaign (Army of the Potomac), Dec., 1862, to May, 1863, participating in the Action of Kelly's Ford, Mar. 17, 1863, and "Stoneman's (Transferred to Ordnance Corps, May 26, 1863) Raid" towards Richmond, Va., Apr. 13 to May 2, 1863; as Asst. Ordnance Officer at Watertown Arsenal, Mas., June 11, 1863, to June 1, 1864, — in the Ordnance Bureau, Washington, D. C., June 10 to Dec. 1, 1864. Bvt. Captain, Mar. 13, 1865, for Faithful and Meritorious Services in the Ordnance Department. Served: as Assistant Constructor of Ordnance at Ft. Pitt Foundry, Pa., Dec. 1, 1864, to June 4, 1867; as Chief Ordnance Officer, Department of the Platte, June 19 to Dec. 12, 1867; as Asst. Ordnance Officer at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., Dec. 12, 1867, to May 5, 1871; in command (Captain, Ordnance, Dec. 15, 1867) of San Antonio Arsenal, Tex., and Chief Ordnance Officer, Department of Texas, May 5, 1871, to Nov. 25, 1879; as Member of the Ordnance (Major, Ordnance, Aug. 2, 1879) Board to Aug. 28, 1881; at the Military Academy, 1881‑86, as Instructor of Ordnance and Gunnery, and commanding Ordnance Detachment, Aug. 28, 1881, to Aug. 28, 1886; in command of Indianapolis Arsenal, Ind., Aug. 31, 1886, to Apr. 2, 1889, and in charge of the establishment of Columbia Arsenal, Ten., Apr. 3, to Dec., 1889; and in command of Indianapolis Arsenal, to –––––. Vol. IV Military History. — Served: In command of the Indianapolis Arsenal, from Dec., 1889 to Feb., 1892. — In command of the New York Arsenal, member of the Board of Ordnance and Fortification, President of the Ordnance Board, from April, 1892, to April, 1894.
