Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1858, to June 11, 1863, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 2d Artillery, June 11, 1863. Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1863‑66: in the Pennsylvania Campaign (Army of the Potomac), being engaged in Pursuit of the enemy from the Potomac to Warrenton, Va., July 19‑31, 1863; in the Rapidan Campaign (Army of the Potomac), Aug. to Dec., 1863, being engaged in the Action near Culpeper, Sep. 13, 1863; in the Richmond Campaign (Army of the Potomac), May‑June, 1864, being engaged in the Battle of Cold Harbor, May 31 to June 1, 1864; in the Defenses of Washington, D. C., June, 1864, to July, 1865; and in garrison (First Lieut., 2d Artillery, June 11, 1864) at Ft. McHenry, Md., July‑Aug., 1865, — and Presidio of San Francisco, Cal., Sep.‑Oct., 1865. Served: on frontier duty at Ft. Stevens, Or., Oct. to Dec., 1865; on Recruiting service, Dec. 15, 1865, to Feb. 19, 1867; on frontier duty at Ft. Stevens, Or., Feb. 20, 1867, to Sep., 1868; in garrison at the Presidio, San Francisco, Cal., to Mar., 1869; and on frontier duty at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., Mar.‑Apr., 1869, — Ft. Riley, Kan., to Sep., 1870 (leave of absence, Sep., 1870, to Mar. 7, 1871), — Ft. Stevens, Or., to Apr. 24, 1871, — and Sitka, Alas., to Jan. 21, 1873.
