a1 a2 Lt. Neff's birth data are from his tombstone, q.v. The nicely researched main page at Find-a‑Grave, linked above, also alerts us to his earlier military career, not mentioned in the Register but given in Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, which also gives his middle name: he served in the Union Army during the War between the States, with Company C, 3d Pennsylvania Infantry, from Apr. 20 to July 29, 1861. The same page at Find-a‑Grave also points us to the possible circumstances of his death.
