Served: on Artillery duty at the Military Academy, June 17 to Aug. 31, 1867; on leave of absence, Aug. 31 to Nov. 1, 1867; on duty with Engineer Battalion at Willet's Point, N. Y., Nov. 1, 1867, to May 1, 1871, being Adjutant, Jan., 1869, Treasurer, June, 1869, and Signal Officer, (First Lieut., Corps of Engineers, Feb. 15, 1869) June, 1870, to May 1, 1871 (leave of absence, May 1‑31, 1870); as Assistant Engineer on the Geodetic Survey of the Northern Lakes, May 6, 1871, to May 5, 1875 (leave of absence, Dec. 21, 1872, to Jan. 20, 1873) — and under the orders of Major Craighill, May 7, 1875, to Apr. 21, 1876; as Chief Engineer of the Department of Dakota, Apr., 1876, to Sep. 5, 1882; superintending Improvement of Missouri River above mouth of Yellowstone, Mar. 21, 1877, and from Sioux City to Ft. Benton, Aug. 8, 1882, and of Yellowstone River, Apr. 5, 1879, to Apr. 15, 1883; (Captain, Corps of Engineers, June 14, 1881) on leave of absence, Apr. 21 to Nov. 14, 1883; in charge of Harbor Improvements on Lake Erie at Dunkirk, Ashtabula, and Conneaut, Nov. 27, 1883, to Mar. 9, 1885, and at Erie, Pa., Nov. 27, 1883, to July 1, 1886, — of Defenses and River and Harbor Improvements in Western New York, Nov. 30, 1883, and in Northern New York, Jan. 28, 1885, to July 1, 1886; as Secretary of Fortification Board, May 28, 1885, to July 9, 1888; on duty with Engineer Battalion and School of Application, Willet's Point, N. Y., July 3, 1886, to Nov. 21, 1888; as Engineer of Fourth Light-house District since Dec. 14, 1888; and as Member of various Boards, 1884‑90. Civil History. — Author of "The Attack and Defense of Coast Fortifications," 1884. Vol. IV Military History. — Served: As member of various Boards and as Engineer 4th Lighthouse District, at Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 14, 1888 to Oct., 1892.
