James Bond Mackall: Born Feb. 21, 1844, Barnesville, OH.​a

Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, Sep. 1, 1864, to June 15, 1868, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to

Bvt. Second Lieut., Corps of Engineers, June 15, 1868.

Served: with the Engineer Battalion at Willet's Point, N. Y., Oct. 1, 1868, to May 27, 1869; on leave of absence, to Aug. 16, 1869; and as Chief Engineer of the District of New Mexico, Aug. 16, 1869, to Apr. 18, 1871.

Died, Apr. 18, 1871, at Santa Fé, N. M.: Aged 27.

a Lt. Mackall's full name and birth data are from his AOG obituary.

b I am not absolutely certain the linked grave is Lt. Mackall's, but the concourse of the name, date of death, rank, and place of burial make it very likely. Only the date of birth as reported on that page appears to be slightly off: but the Register is often mistaken by a day or two, and the Veterans' Affairs Department records and their further transcriptions are even more subject to error.
