McPherson, Neb., to Nov. 27, 1871 (Lodge Pole and Potter's Station, Wy., Apr. to Nov., 1870), — Camp Grant, Ara., to Dec., 1872, (First Lieut., 5th Cavalry, Aug. 29, 1872) p138 — Quartermaster, 5th Cavalry, Aug. 29, 1872, to Oct. 5, 1876, — Camp McDowell, Ara., Dec., 1872, to Jan., 1873, — and Scouting to Apr., 1873; as Member of Board to purchase horses, to July, 1873; on leave of absence, July 25, 1873, to Jan. 26, 1874; on frontier duty at Camp Lowell, Ara., Mar. 2, 1874, to May 20, 1875, — and Ft. Hays, Kan. to Apr. 23, 1876 (leave of absence, June 28 to Aug. 25, 1875); as Member of Board to purchase horses, to July 14, 1876; on frontier duty at Ft. D. A. Russell, Wy., and Scouting, Aug. 28, 1876, to May 29, 1877, being engaged in the Fight at Bates Creek, Wy., Nov. 25, 1876, — Scouting, to Oct. 28, 1877, — and Ft. McPherson, Neb., Oct. 28, 1877, to Sep. 22, 1878 (leave of absence, June 1‑30, 1878); on Mounted Recruiting Service, Oct. 2, 1878, to Dec. 31, 1881; on frontier duty at Ft. Sidney, Neb., to Apr. 15, 1883, — and Ft. McKinney, Wy., to May 1, 1885; at the Military Academy, as Quartermaster, and in command of Artillery Detachment, July 1, 1885, (Captain, 5th Cavalry, Apr. 24, 1886) to June 30, 1887; on frontier duty at Ft. Supply, I. T., Sep. 18, 1887, to Apr. 30, 1888; and on sick leave of absence to Aug. 21, 1888. Died, Aug. 21, 1888, at Insane Hospital, Washington, D. C.: Aged 41. a Capt. Rockwell's middle name and his birthplace are from his AOG obituary: to the latter it adds "now Kent, Ohio". His date of birth is from his tombstone (q.v.).
