Austin Lamartine Peircea Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1865, to June 15, 1870, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 4th Cavalry, June 15, 1870. p155 Served: on frontier duty at Ft. Griffin, Tex., Oct. 4 to Nov. 30, 1870. Died, Nov. 30, 1870, at Ft. Griffin, Tex.: Aged 22.b Buried, San Antonio National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX. |
a Lt. Peirce's middle name is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, which also confirms the spelling of his last name. His current tombstone in San Antonio spells his last name Pierce: his grave was moved, however, from its original site at Fort Griffin, and I don't know whether this is the original tombstone.
b Although Lt. Peirce has no AOG obituary of his own, the circumstances of his death are told in the AOG obituary of his classmate Clinton H. Tebbetts, q.v.
