Edwin Henry Shelton: Born June 29, 1850.a Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1866, to June 15, 1870, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 1st Cavalry, June 15, 1870. Served: on frontier duty at Camp McDowell, Ara., Nov. 24, 1870, to June, 1871, — Ft. Lapwai, Ida., July 10, 1871, to Oct. 29, 1875 (Camp Harney, Or., Apr. 22 to May 29, 1873), — Ft. Walla Walla, Wash., Nov. 2, 1875, to May 1, 1877, — Scouting, and on Nez Percés Expedition, (First Lieut., 1st Cavalry, Mar. 30, 1877) to Sep. 3, 1877, — Ft. Walla Walla, Wash., Sep. 3, 1877, to Nov., 1878, — and Ft. Klamath, Or., Nov. 9, 1878, to Jan. 7, 1880; and on leave of absence, to Jan. 13, 1880. Died, Jan. 13,b 1880, at Canyonville, Or.: Aged 29. a Lt. Shelton's full name is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army; his birthdate is given identically on both his tombstones.
b I find two gravesites online for Lt. Shelton, each with a photograph:
Mountain View Cemetery, Walla Walla, WA.
Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, CT.
The reader will notice that the date of his death is given as Jan. 12 on one, and Jan. 13 on the other.
