Joshua Legrand Knappa Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1869, to June 13, 1873, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 4th Artillery, June 13, 1873. Served: on graduation leave of absence, June 13 to Sep. 30, 1873; (First Lieut., 4th Artillery, Jan. 10, 1877) and on frontier duty at Ft. Stevens, Or., Sep. 30, 1873, to Apr. 19, 1877.

a Lt. Knapp's full name is from List of Cadets admitted into the United States Military Academy, West Point, N. Y., from its Origin till September 1, 1886 (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1887). His modern tombstone — see the burial link above — spells his first name Joshau, and gives his death date as April 9.
