and on frontier duty at Ft. Stevens, Or., Sep. 30, 1873, to Apr. 19, 1877.

Drowned, Apr. 19, 1877,
in Young's Bay, near Astoria, Or.: Aged 31.

Buried, Fort Stevens Cemetery, Warrenton, OR.


Thayer's Note:

a Lt. Knapp's full name is from List of Cadets admitted into the United States Military Academy, West Point, N. Y., from its Origin till September 1, 1886 (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1887). His modern tombstone — see the burial link above — spells his first name Joshau, and gives his death date as April 9.
