Thayer's Note:

a Lt. Thorington's middle name is from Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army; his birth data are from his AOG obituary.

His page at Find-a‑Grave (q.v.) gives his birthdate as Dec. 11, 1853: I've been unable to substantiate that from a primary source, and it should be noted that not only does the Register give his age at death as 23 (making him born between September 1854 and September 1855) the Official Register of the Officers and Cadets of the U. S. Military Academy for June, 1874, recapitulating his Fourth Class year — gives his age on July 1, 1873 as 18 years 6 months, which would put his birthday in December, 1854.
