Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1820, to July 1, 1824, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 7th Infantry, July 1, 1824. Served: on frontier duty at Ft. Gibson, I. T., 1825‑27; at the Military Academy, 1827‑34, as Asst. Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, (First Lieut., 7th Infantry, June 30, 1830) and Geology, Aug. 8, 1827, to Apr. 1, 1829, and Aug. 31 to Nov. 30, 1830, — and as Asst. Professor of Geography, History, and Ethics, Nov. 30, (Captain, 7th Infantry, June 1, 1835) 1830, to Oct. 14, 1834; and on frontier duty at Ft. Gibson, I. T., 1835‑36. Resigned, July 31, 1836. Civil History. — Principal of Normal School, Bridgewater, Mas. (established for the education of Teachers, by the State of Massachusetts), 1840‑53. Elected Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Natural History, College of Louisiana, 18–––; declined. Died, Apr. 9, 1856, at Bridgewater, Mas.: Aged 51. |
