"For meritorious services in voluntarily allowing himself at the risk of his life to be lowered over an almost vertical cliff in order to rescue an injured soldier who lay on a shelf, less than six feet wide, on the side of a canyon, and with a drop of five hundred feet to the valley below, in the vicinity of Pali, Island of Oahu, Hawaii, Sept. 24, 1914."

Commendation for Meritorious Service.

"For meritorious services June 5, 1919, in personally conducting an engine to immediate vicinity of the burning ammunition salvage dump adjacent to Amuo Depot No. 351, Mulheim, Germany, and removing cars loaded with ammunition which were in danger of being explored and destroyed by burning shells."
