Second Lieut., 3d Infantry, July 1, 1829. Served: on frontier duty at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., 1829‑30, — on Red River, about Natchitoches,º La., 1830‑31, — Ft. Towson, I. T., 1831‑33, — (Second Lieut., 1st Dragoons, Mar. 4, 1833)º (First Lieut., 1st Dragoons, Mar. 4, 1833)º Ft. Gibson, I. T., 1834, — Santa Fé Trace, 1834, — Ft. Gibson, I. T., 1834, — Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1834‑35, — Expedition to Rocky Mountains, 1835, — and Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., 1835; and on leave of absence, 1835‑36. Resigned, Mar. 31, 1836. Civil History. — Fur Trader among the Rocky Mountains, 1836‑45. Farmer, near Pueblo City, N. M., 1846‑49. Merchant in California, 1849‑52. Mining, near Coloma, Cal., 1852‑59, and near Greenwood, Cal., 1859‑62. Farmer in San Joaquin County, Cal., 1862‑68, and in Humboldt County, Cal., 1874‑85. Died, Aug. 2, 1885,a2 near Arcata, Cal.: Aged 78. Buried, Blue Lake Cemetery, Blue Lake, CA. |
a1 a2 I transcribe here the inscription on his (apparently contemporaneous) tombstone (q.v.), first because the information in it differs somewhat from that in the Register, then because it's the source for the birthdate I give above.
