Thayer's Notes:

a A very complete and rather dramatic account of Gen. Clark's secret trip to Algeria, from first‑hand sources, is given by G. Ward Price in Giraud and the African Scene, pp86‑102 (especially p94 ff., from when he actually landed).

b Gen. Clark died after the publication of Vol. IX (1950), the most recent volume of the Supplements to Cullum's Register available to me, which may also be the most recent volume in the public domain. The date of his death is from several contemporary newspapers, and the biographical sketch prefacing the Finding Aid of his papers at The Citadel, of which he was President from 1954 to 1968. That sketch is somewhat more detailed than the above, and extends the full length of his career.
