Thayer's Notes:

a Gen. Hughes' birthplace is from various online genealogical pages, including a posting on an Ancestry.com board by Evan Heus, who identifies himself as his grandson.

b Oliver Hughes continued in military service for a number of years after the publication of Vol. IX (1950), the most recent volume of the Supplements to Cullum's Register available to me, which may also be the most recent volume in the public domain. I've been unable, however, to find any reliable details of his career. His final rank was Brigadier General, according to a newspaper obituary of his wife in The State (Columbia, SC), Apr. 3, 1974.

The date and place of his death are from from a placeholder page at the West Point Association of Graduates.
