John Thomas Metcalfe: Born July 10, 1818, Natchez, MS. Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1834, to July 1, 1838, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, July 1, 1838. Second Lieut., Ordnance, July 9, 1838. Served: in command of Augusta Arsenal, Ga., 1838; and in the Florida War, 1838‑39, in command of Garey's Ferry Ordnance Depot. Resigned, May 31, 1840. Civil History. — Graduated in Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, 1843. Physician near Natchez, Mis., 1845‑46, — and in New York city, since 1846. Attending Physician to Bellevue Hospital, 1847‑59, — and Consulting Physician, since 1859. Inspector of Public Schools, New York side, 1847‑48. Physician to New York Hospital for Lying‑in Women, 1850‑60. Consulting Physician to the New York Deaf and Dumb Institution, since 1851, — to St. Luke's Hospital, since 1853, p700 — and to Children's Nursery and Hospital, 1855‑60. Attending Physician to the New York City Hospital, 1857. Professor of Institutes and Practice of Medicine in the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York, 1856‑66, — and Clinical Medicine in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, 1866. Author of various papers on Medical Science, 1845‑87. Vol. IV Civil History. — Retired physician, Cold Spring, Putnam County, N. Y. Vol. V Civil History. — Retired physician, Cold Spring, Putnam County, N. Y. Died Jan. 30, 1902, at Thomasville, Ga.: Aged 84. See Annual Association of Graduates, U. S. M.
