Cyrus B. Comstock: Engineer of harbor and river improvements thruout the eastern United States; fought in the War between the States.

Godfrey Weitzel: Engineer of harbor and river improvements thruout the United States; a Union general in the War between the States, he was the first military governor of Louisiana, and later commanded the forces that took Richmond. Photograph.

Cornelius Van Camp: Fought against Indians in Texas, and was killed three years after graduating.

George H. Elliot: Fought Indians in Texas, and served in the Union Army during the War between the States; then nearly forty years as an army engineer working on rivers, harbors, aqueducts, and lighthouses.

Junius B. Wheeler: Engineer; fought for the Union in the War between the States; taught sixteen years at the Military Academy.

Ebenezer Gay: Fought Indians in Utah, and fought for the Union in the War between the States, but his Army career ended in an alcohol problem not long after the war, and he died the same year, still young.

Samuel Breck: Served on the western frontier and fought for the Union in the War between the States; after the war, an Adjutant-General of various departments, ending his career as Adjutant-General of the Army.

David McM. Gregg: Cavalry­man, leader of a number of celebrated Union raids in the War between the States.

Frederick L. Childs: Served on the western frontier and fought for the Confederacy in the War between the States; engineer and customs inspector for the Federal government.

John V. D. Du Bois: Cavalry­man, fought Indians on the western frontier and fought for the Union in the War between the States; after the war, a patchy career in the West.

Michael P. Small: Served in the Third Seminole War, and in the Union Army during the War between the States; ended his thirty‑seven-year career as Chief Commissary of the Department of the East.

Francis R. T. Nicholls: Resigned after a year to practice law in his home State of Louisiana; fought for the Confederacy in the War between the States; after the war, eventually served two terms as Governor of Louisiana, then was the State's Chief Justice.

Alexander S. Webb: Served in the Third Seminole War, fought for the Union in the War between the States (Medal of Honor); President of the College of the City of New York.

John W. Turner: Served in the Third Seminole War nfou for the Union in the War between the States; manufacturing executive and banker at St. Louis.

Francis A. Shoup: Served in the Third Seminole War; resigned after four years, fought for the Confederacy in the War between the States, and after the war was a professor of mathematics and of metaphysics and an Episcopal minister. [+ AOG]

John R. Church: Cavalry­man, fought Indians on the western frontier, and seems to have served in the Confederate Army during the War between the States; died seven years after graduating.

Albert V. Colburn: Cavalry­man, fought Indians and Confederates; died eight years after graduating, but not killed in action.

James Wheeler: Fought Indians in the Pacific Northwest and fought for the Union in the War between the States, but dismissed during the war for multiple offenses; in civilian life, a teacher.

George D. Ruggles: Served on the western frontier; fought for the Union in the War between the States; ended his career as Adjutant-General of the Army.

Lewis Merrill: Served on the western frontier, fought for the Union in the War between the States, mostly in Missouri.

Alfred T. A. Torbert: Served on the western frontier and in the Third Seminole War; fought for the Union in the War between the States; after the war, a diplomatic career.

Charles W. Thomas: Fought Mexican invaders in Texas, fought for the Union in the War between the States; after the war, a depot quartermaster then a civilian employee of the Interior Department.

James H. Hill: Served on the Midwestern frontier and fought for the Confederacy in the War between the States; the Register knows nothing of his civilian life for twenty-five years after the war.

Edward L. Hartz: Infantry­man, spent most of his 11‑year Army career in Texas; fought Indians, scouted, and field-tested camels for military transportation.

Clarence E. Bennett: Resigned after five years on the western frontier, but rejoined the Union Army almost immediately to defend his area of California against Confederates; continued his Army career another thirty years mostly in Dakota Territory.

William W. Averell: Cavalry­man, fought Indians in New Mexico and fought for the Union in the War between the States, resigning at the end of it; a civil engineer.

Timothy M. Bryan: Resigned in a year and a half; fought for the Union in the War between the States, despite recurring illness; a civilian geologist.

William B. Hazen: Fought Indians on the western frontier, and the Union in the War between the States; Superintendent of Indian Affairs; headed the Signal Office.

Henry W. Freedley: Infantry­man, served in garrisons mostly in New Mexico; the outbreak of the War between the States found him in Texas, where he was captured and paroled; released, he fought for the Union, and after a wound at Gettysburg, was assigned to various off-battlefield duties.

Henry M. Lazelle: Fought Indians on the western frontier, and for the Union during part of the War between the States; Commandant of Cadets at the Academy.

William R. Pease: Most of his career was spent as a recruiting, mustering and disbursing officer, but he also fought in the War between the States; the Register gives no indication of his twenty-five years of civilian life.

Jesse K. Allen: Killed by Indians three years after graduating.

Robert C. Hill: Fought in the Third Seminole War, and served in Utah and New Mexico; fought for the Confederacy in the War between the States, and died during the war.

George McGunnegle Dick: Died in Texas a year after graduating.
