Maps

These maps, like all the other images in my copy of the printed book, are found there in black-and‑white. I've taken advantage of the possibilities of color to make them clearer (or so I believe); following first of all my usual scheme, distinguishing rivers, towns, and roads; and in the maps on this page the boundaries of native American lands, federal state boundaries, and the coördinate grid.

In the original, the native American lands, best shown in the first map by a red border, are not shaded. The pale red shading is my addition to all of them. Similarly, the cessions, though clearly demarcated in each map, were unshaded: the yellow shading is mine. Finally, to make the cumulative effect of the cessions clearer, in each map, I've added a green shade to indicate lands previously ceded, which were not marked at all in the later maps of the series: in the fourth and final map, how little land remained in native American hands becomes immediately apparent.

The book includes a fifth map, showing in a more general way the approximate areas inhabited by the five principal tribal groups; it is on p84.
