 p209  Appendix

No complete statistics covering the China trade from 1784 to 1844 are available. In the following table the number of American ships employed at Canton and the quantities of tea exported for the period 1784‑85 to 1803‑04 are taken from William Milburn's Oriental Commerce (London, 1813), and from 1804‑05 to 1819‑20, from estimates of the Senate Finance Committee as reported in House Document 137, nineteenth Congress, first session. There are no figures for American exports and imports for the first of these two periods. For the second, their annual values, as of Canton, are taken from the Senate Finance Committee's report. From 1821 on official figures are available in U. S. Treasury reports giving American exports to China and imports from China. They may be found for almost the entire period (together with the number of the American ships which sailed to the United States from Canton) in House Document 35, twenty-seventh Congress, third session. Various other statistical tables (incomplete) appear in other sources, while an almost similar tabulation may be found in Kenneth Scott Latourette's Voyages of American Ships to China, 1784‑1844, in Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, vol. 28, New Haven, 1927.
