(9th and 10th Centuries)

Monuments: Bakheng, Pre Rup, East Mebon.

Characteristics: Brick prevailing over sandstone. Tympana above lintels inscribed in rectangular frames, not triangular ones. Small bas‑relief figures adorning tower angles. Carving lithe and delicate.

Art of Suryavarman I: Sivaist Cult
(10th and 11th Centuries)

Monuments: Baphuon, Royal Palace, Kleangs, Ta Keo, Prah Pithu, Prah Palilai, Thommanon, Chausai, West Mebon, Banteai Srei.

Characteristics: Timber beams encased in masonry above openings. Elaborate sandstone construction. Purely ornamental and logically distributed decoration, with fronts ofttimes partly bare. No large bas‑reliefs or great carved figures. Few religious scenes.

Art of Angkor Wat: Vishnu Cult
(12th Century)

Characteristics: Masterly and elaborate architecture. Delicacy of sculpture and decoration. Shallow bas‑reliefs, but of fine composition.

(12th and 13th Centuries)

Monuments: The Bayon, five gates of Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm, Banteai Kedei, Neak Pean, Ta Som, Prah Khan.

Characteristics: Hurried, unelaborated construction, mostly in sandstone, with excessive decoration. Tympana decorated with religious scenes. Huge figures carved with strong relief. Sham windows with round balusters encased in masonry.
