p169  XC. Trajan prepares stores of timber

The first care of the emperor after the capture of this important place is the preparation of stores of timber for building and for various constructions. The Romans are on the slopes of the Carpathians, and are near the retreat of the Dacian king. A number of men belonging to the heavy troops are cutting down large trees. The timber as it is cut is piled with perfect regularity in stacks. It is laid out at one place in the form of a circular bastion, behind which shelter can be found in case of any sudden attempts at interruption.
