The Massacre of the Innocents, from the Christmas cycle (10th or 11th century) |
Part of the remaining fragments of the 11c main altar of S. Cerbone, now set into a wall near the entrance. It depicts King Herod on his throne being presented by a soldier with the cut-up bodies of babies (see this close-up) while older children, safe from the king's edict, huddle against their mothers.
