Passaggio di Bettona (Perugia province)

A town of central Umbria, a frazione of Bettona: 43°01.5N, 12°30E. Altitude: 202 m. Population in 2001: 896.

[image ALT: A tall building of irregular limestone masonry, composed of a thin cylindrical curtain wall rising to a triangular peak; the wall is divided vertically by a long slit thru the lower part of which the square windows of the actual building may be seen. It is the modern church of Passaggio di Bettona, Umbria (central Italy).]

Madonna del Ponte, the parish church of Passaggio: Umbrian limestone, 20c.

Passaggio di Bettona is a frazione of the comune of Bettona, about 3 km SW, which is also the nearest town. Though Bettona, high on its hill, has the history and the municipal offices, Passaggio, in the fertile agricultural floodplain of the Topino river, like several other similar lower towns in Umbria, has a slightly greater population and thus the economic pull.

The gentle reader mustn't get the idea I know the town well. I crossed it on foot one morning; some very slight additional feel for the place may be got from the brief entry in my diary, Nov. 2, 1998.
