Maintenance and Change:

The Abbey Church of S. Michele di Limigiano

[image ALT: Part of a small two-story church of rough stone masonry, seen from the rear; on the right side there is a square belfry one story taller. It is a partial view of the apse of the church of S. Michele in Limigiano, Umbria (central Italy).]

The apse of the church serves as a backdrop for a small park; our bench faces the sunset.

The exterior of the church gives a pretty clear history of itself, from its foundation in the 11c, maybe even using Roman material, thru several phases of construction, repair, and maintenance in the Middle Ages and on to our own time.

The interior of S. Michele, sadly, is an illustration of the need for this ongoing repair and maintenance: restored in 1947, the church has since suffered damage that is causing its frescoes to deteriorate once again.
