Città della Pieve

Citta della Pieve, a town and episcopal see of Umbria, Italy, in the province of Perugia, situated 1666 ft. above the sea,  p399 3 m. NE of its station on the railway between Chiusi and Orvieto. Pop. (1901) 8381.a Etruscan tombs have been found in the neighbourhood, but it is not certain that the present town stands on an ancient site. It was the birthplace of the painter Pietro Vannucci (Perugino), and possesses several of his works, but none of the first rank.

Thayer's Note:

a In 2000, the official census figures gave Città della Pieve 6,960 inhabitants; the episcopal see is now (2003) that of "Perugia and Città della Pieve".
