Our good bishop wields his crozier in his left hand, using it to transfix the devil, or one of his creatures at least; in his right, the book he holds announces peace to the faithful: PAX VOBIS. Iconographically, this is very similar to the Great Seal of the United States, where the eagle holds the olive branch in his right talon and the arrows of war in his left.
On the frame to our right, the sculptor has signed his work; but all I can make out so far is . . . FECit: ". . . made this."
