History of Lithuania

I may never have a very large mass of material onsite on Lithuanian history, but since there isn't that much online in an accessible format in English or any other Western language, what I do have, which after all includes a solid general history, may be useful. I do also hope soon to expand this Lithuanian material: stay tuned.

The first modern general history of Lithuania in English was published in 1946: The Story of Lithuania, by Fr. Thomas G. Chase, takes us from the earliest historical times in the high Middle Ages thru to 1945, offering a dense overview of events, mostly political and military, until World War II, which is the subject of a more detailed and journalistic final chapter dealing with what at the time were very recent events.

In 1925, a French journalist, Jean Mauclère, spent six weeks in Lithuania on a thoughtfully arranged trip the purpose of which seems to have been to foster Franco-Lithuanian cultural relations. On returning, he wrote Sous le ciel pâle de Lithuanie: an impressionistic but careful account of his perambulations around the country, which at the time was still recovering from the German and Russian depredations during World War I, and was still partially occupied by Poland. The book is seriously flawed by his antisemitism and also to an extent by his somewhat bloated and precious prose style, but he was a good observer and it's worth reading. 🇫🇷 In French.

From time to time, I'll also be adding a few journal articles, encyclopedia entries, etc. Here are the first:

Moroni, Dizionario di Erudizione Storico-Ecclesiastica, articles: Lituania [Lithuania] •  Radzwil, Giorgio [Jurgis Radvila] •  Samogizia [Samogitia] •  Wilna [Vilnius]

[On a plain background, a vertical cross with two crossbars symmetrically placed at roughly one-third and two-thirds of the way down: it is the Double Cross of Lithuania. This design serves to represent the section of my site on Lithuanian history.]

The icon I use for this subsite is one of the national emblems of Lithuania, the Double Cross, in its usual colors as borne on the shield of the White Knight in Lithuania's coat of arms.
