My small collection of materials relating to Native Americans.
Grant Foreman's The Five Civilized Tribes chronicles the 19c history of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, and Cherokee, from their removal from the eastern United States thru their resettlement in the 'Indian Territory', now Oklahoma. Leaning heavily on primary sources, it details their tribal politics, their interaction with missionaries and the federal government, and their concern with education.

General Stand Watie's Confederate Indians tells the story, fleshed out with a fair amount of context, of the Confederate service of a significant body of native Americans under the leadership of Stand Watie, a Cherokee chief who became the only native American to reach general officer rank during the War between the States. The author wears his Lost Cause sympathies on his sleeve, but the story has rarely caught the attention of historians, and Cunningham gives the reader a good idea of the politics navigated by the native tribes caught in the maelstrom of the war.

The icon I use to indicate this subsite is my colorization of a motif from an Apache basket found in a photo taken in 1893 (National Archives Identifier 530874) of an Apache basketwork collection of Lieutenant L. P. Davidson, 11th Infantry.
