June 25 — Devil John Wright's grave in Pound, Virginia. A drive across half of Tennessee, and my first day visiting Nashville. All Greek text onsite is now in Unicode. The 12,013 passages of Greek, from single letters to large blocks of text, found in 1252 webpages, had been rendered in four different systems, each time in the hope that it would be the definitive one. This time I waited until I felt really secure — famous last words — Anyhow, the switchover took a week's work, seems to be OK, and left me with no more than an increased revulsion for Greek. If, however, you spot a systematic Greek error please alert me: the mistakes most likely to have occurred across several pages are χ for ξ or ψ and vice-versa, lower case where upper is to be expected (especially α for Α), and breathings instead of accents inside words (not counting words like κἂν, of course, which are fine). To search for Greek on a page or onsite, TLG encoding no longer works; you must now use a Unicode keyboard. Also, Google needs a few weeks to catch up and reindex according to the new transcription. |
