a I wish to express my thanks to the author for volunteering to write this paper specially for LacusCurtius; and he has even generously ceded it to the public domain.
Dr. Rushkin (curriculum vitae) is a physicist whose research and publications include various topics in fluid dynamics; but his interests also extend to Graeco-Roman history (see his blog), and he has several translations of ancient authors to his credit: in sum, the ideal person to address the subject of the article presented here.
