Appian: The Roman History

The Author, the Manuscripts

As with most ancient authors, not that much is known of Appian, and the Loeb edition's introductory material, by Horace White, is about as good as one can get; the principal manuscripts of the Roman History are also treated there, if very summarily. See also the more recent and more general account of Appian's life (at Livius), with additional material.

The Text of Appian on LacusCurtius

For now, only the Civil Wars, and only the English translation: although there is, that I know of, no Greek original of the work online anywhere, I do not plan to enter it myself, since those, now few, who read Greek will very likely have access to the TLG.

For Appian's Foreign Wars, the links, in italics, are to the English translation at Livius. There is also a Greek text and an English translation online at Perseus.

The English translation is that by Horace White, first published in 1913 as part of the Loeb Classical Library. It is in the public domain. (Details here on the copyright law involved.)

As almost always, I retyped the text by hand rather than scanning it — not only to minimize errors prior to proofreading, but as an opportunity for me to become intimately familiar with the work, an exercise which I heartily recommend: Qui scribit, bis legit. (Well-meaning attempts to get me to scan text, if successful, would merely turn me into some kind of machine: gambit declined.)

The transcription is being minutely proofread. In the table of contents below, the Books that I have completely proofread are shown on blue backgrounds; any red backgrounds indicate that the proofreading is still incomplete. The header bar at the top of each webpage will remind you with the same color scheme. In either case of course, should you spot an error, please do report it.
