LXXI

Mersa procul terris in cespite lympha profundo
Non nisi perfossis possum procedere venis,
Labor et ad superos alieno ducta labore.

Peck:

Deep water that a sunken clod sustains,
Go forth I cannot, save through piercéd veins,
And painfully I rise, led by another's pains.

Ohl:

Sunk far beneath the ground in the deep soil, I am water that cannot flow forth except when channels are dug through the earth, and I am lifted to the world above, drawn by another's toil.
