The Ethiopian George

This icon of St. George shows him killing a dragon. The writing is Ge'ez. Curiously, a small cross- (or sword-?) bearing figure is emerging from the dragon: a saved victim? the soul of the dragon? But compare mid-Byzantine icons, which sometimes show a small female figure on the rump of George's horse, or sometimes in front of the horse. The figure is metamorphosed in later icons into a young man sometimes wearing a fez (!).
