Discovered in the Baths of Caracalla c.1546, this massive statue is a copy of a fourth-century original, probably by Lysippus. It shows the weary hero resting after his labors, leaning on his club and holding behind his back the golden apples that eventually will ensure his immortality. The powerful musculature and realistic portrayal were particularly admired by artists of the Baroque.
